40 Days of Prayer Day 33 "Be Still Before the Lord, Wait Patiently for Him" (Part 2)

7 Days till Pentecost

Go out and stand before me on top of the mountain,” the Lord said to him. Then the Lord passed by and sent a furious wind that split the hills and shattered the rocks - but the Lord was not in the wind. The wind stopped blowing, and then there was an earthquake - but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire - but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the soft whisper of a voice. When Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.. A voice said to him, “Elijah, what are you doing here?” (1 Kings 19: 11 – 13 Good News Translation).

These words led to the composing of the hymn “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind” by John Greenleaf Whittier (my Great Uncle) in 1872, which led me to this prayer:

Father God, our loving Yahweh, “forgive our foolish ways”, our disobedience to Your Word. Our world, the world of Your Creation, is in chaos and upheaval, filled with serious illness, ugly rhetoric, and behavior. Lord God, we call on You to fill us with the beauty of Your Peace and healing, show us how to be still and quiet enough to hear Your Voice and feel Your Peace.

Thank you for Your unending Love and Patience, with such unruly children, and create a selflessness in each person, that we are able to hear Your “still, small voice of calm”. When we finally hear that voice lead us to “rise up and follow Thee”. We adore You and love You and praise You. This prayer is offered in the name of Jesus.

Amen
